Once again: What are the goals and the challenges, when we talk about primary research data in the context of an university? Why long-term preservation of research data Research and development, science and teaching on an university level are being transformed by dramatic change processes in information technology and its applications over the last years. The power of computers and computer systems has incredibly grown up, the bandwidths of the worldwide networks has increased dramatically and the volumes of data and information in general cannot be measured anymore 2.

As already mentioned above, since hundreds of years, libraries have expertise to handle big amounts of data, especially in printed format. In this respect, libraries know what do, how to structure the metadata, how to catalog the books and how to keep accessible big collections.

The situation in the electronic world is quite different, much more complex, much more technology-driven and the handling of data in the digital world is first of all a mass problem.
